COMMUNITY SERVICE: WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S

Atlantic students are invited to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Mizner Park Amphitheatre. The Alzheimer's Association will provide 7 hours of community service to students who volunteer at the event, an additional 3 hours for students who are registered to walk, and additional hours for other activities before the event.

The Ocean Conservancy's 30th annual International Coastal Cleanup is Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 am to 10 am at the Sandoway House Nature Center, 142 South Ocean Blvd. Supplies will be provided and participants will earn community service hours.

Details and registration forms are on the city's website. Download the Ocean Conservancy's “Cleans Swell” app from the Apple or Android app store to keep track of the trash you pick up.

Palm Beach Animal County Animal Care is in need of shelter volunteers and fosters to temporarily house animals. Visit the Animal Care website for volunteer information and applications. 

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers to maintain trails at West Delray Regional Park on Atlantic Avenue just west of 441 (State Road 7) on the third Sunday of every month at 8 am (May 17, June 21 and July 19). Meet at the trail head near the RC car track. Gery Kinnard is the volunteer coordinator. Text your name to 602-515-6864 for more information. Volunteers must be age 15 or older or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

ROOTS CULTURAL FESTIVAL ACADEMIC OLYMPICS

The Roots Cultural Festival is sponsoring an Academic Olympics competition on Saturday, July 11, from 8 am to 2 pm at Pompey Park. The competition is open to students in grades 3 to 12. Events include essay, oratorical and math contests, and a spelling bee, each in elementary, middle and high school divisions. Atlantic students are participating in a Delray Beach Rotary Club sponsored food drive benefiting students at Pine Grove Elementary School. Bring canned goods and other nonperishables (peanut butter, tuna, canned meat, cereal bars, fruit cups and the like) to the cafeteria by March 11. Food will be distributed during spring break to families of Pine Grove students who receive breakfast and lunch at school. Community service hours will be awarded.

Neuroscience Discovery Day at the Max Planck Institute

Neuroscience Discovery Day on Saturday, Dec. 13 is an all-day celebration commemorating the December 2012 grand opening of the Max Planck Institute for Neuroscience. 

Students of all ages and adults are invited to explore interactive neuroscience activities such as Measure your Muscles, Do-it-yourself DNA, and Rewire your Brain. The celebration is free of charge and open to the public.

Participate in experiments and demonstrations with neuroscientists and get a behind-the-scences look at where discoveries are born.

The Rotary Club of Delray Beach is hosting the 53rd Annual Halloween parade downtown on Saturday, Oct. 25. Volunteers should report to Atlantic Avenue at NE 2nd Avenue at 12 noon and plan to work until 2 pm. 

The parade begins at 1 pm at the southeast corner of Old School Square Park and proceeds east on Atlantic Avenue through downtown to Veterans Park.
