MEET DISTRICT 4 SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES
The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum at 7 pm on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Crest Theatre featuring School Board district 4 run-off candidates Tom Sutterfield and Erica Whitfield. District 4 includes the eastern, western and southern portions of Delray Beach. NOVEMBER 4 TAX LEVY REFERENDUM The November 4 general election ballot will include a countywide referendum to authorize the continuation of the existing property tax levy that funds arts, PE and choice programs, including career academies and the IB program at Atlantic. The school district referendum information page has detailed information about the referendum, including a school-by-school list showing how many students are affected by the funding, and a 2014 expenditure report. The school and the district are doing all they can to ensure that students have the textbooks and other instructional materials that they need.
However, because funds allocated by the legislature were insufficient, the district is about $3.5 million short of the amount needed to purchase newly adopted materials. School district officials have renegotiated several large orders and have been able to acquire funds to order required materials, and they have met with local legislators who serve on the appropriations committee to discuss the dilemma the district is facing. As the school receives more information on the status of textbook orders we will share it with you. SEPT. 23 UPDATE: Parents who are concerned about classes that have not been provided textbooks are encouraged to contact Bill Purtell at the school district ([email protected] or 684-5145). The School District of Palm Beach County and and Healthy Schools LLC are offering the FluMist® vaccine to ATL students on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Your insurance company will be billed for the vaccine, but there will be no co-payment or other charge. Students with no insurance will receive the vaccine at no cost. Click here for a copy of the informational letter sent home with students. Fill out the consent form on the Healthy Schools website where you'll find more information about the program.
The science club offers tutoring for any science subject on Tuesdays from 3:00 pm to 4:50 pm in Mr. Meagher's classroom, room 6-116. All students are welcome.
The Spanish Honor Society offers tutoring from 2:45 pm to 4:45 pm on Tuesdays in room 5-316. Students should bring textbooks, a notebook and questions or assignments they're working on. Student tutors will work individually with students who need assistance.
The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting a school board candidates forum Oct. 2 at 7 pm at the Crest Theatre at Delray Beach Center for the Arts. It's a great opportunity for parents to meet the candidates and ask them what they'll do for our school.
