Congratulations to junior Meera Radhakrishnan who is one of two Palm Beach County high school students selected for the Sunshine State Scholar Recognition Program.

Meera was selected based on her excellence in math and science and participation in Mu Alpha Theta, the mathematics honor society. The district scholars, along with their parents and a science or math teacher of the student’s choice, will be invited to a ceremony in Orlando in early 2014. Read more about Meera in the Sun-Sentinel here.

The goals of the program are to recognize student achievement and to increase the number of students with outstanding mathematics and science credentials who choose to attend Florida colleges and universities.

Kash is a bloodhound donated to the Palm Beach County School Police Department by the Jimmy Ryce Center for Victims of Predatory Abduction. Kash (his name is an acronym for "kids are safe here") has been stationed with Officer Curtis Riddick at Atlantic High School since last year. After Kash completes his training, he and Officer Riddick will work throughout Palm Beach County to assist in finding missing and endangered children and adults.

The Atlantic Community High School Student Government Association, People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Club and Parent Teacher Student Association are hosting a party for Kash on Friday, Dec. 13, during all three lunch periods in honor of his first birthday and to raise money for the Jimmy Ryce Center so the center can donate more bloodhounds like Kash to police departments across the country.

Students who purchase a got Kash t-shirt will receive an exclusive invitation to Kash's birthday bash, and all proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the Jimmy Ryce Foundation. See your SGA representative for t-shirt ordering details.

Two of Kash's brothers and his sister will be at the party, along with Jimmy Ryce Center founder Don Ryce whose son was abducted in 1995. Mr. Ryce will be presented with a check from Atlantic High School. Click here to read more about Kash.

At the October 25, 2013, Criminal Justice Academy promotion ceremony.
DID YOU KNOW the Atlantic Community High School Criminal Justice Academy has an annual promotion ceremony? The 2013 ceremony was October 25. We asked academy instructor Karl Milenkovic to tell us about the promotion ceremony:

The yearly promotion ceremony is where we elevate those who are leading by example in the areas of academics, physical fitness, marching and leadership.
  • Students promoted to corporal were Raven Peele, Gregory Wright, Nicholas Cooper and Lucas Pereira.
  • Sarah Long, Alexis Garnett, Mercy Lewis and Alieza Corona were promoted to sergeant.
  • Promoted to lieutenant were Louis Bonet, Ilyana Escalona, Kimberly Acuna and Evena Elison.
  • Avencia Pierre was promoted to captain.
  • Mariah Little was promoted to the highest academy rank.

The Criminal Justice Academy has a strong partnership with the Delray Beach Police Department. Students work alongside police department employees in the community at events such as Paint Up Delray and beach clean-ups, and providing holiday meals to the needy in the community.
