STATE RELEASES 2015 FSA RESULTS

9/30/2015

The Florida Department of Education has released the spring 2015 results of the Florida Standard Assessments (FSA) in english language arts and mathematics, and End of Course (EOC) exam results for Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and geometry. Students will receive their official individual reports by mail after Oct. 24.

Note from the school district: School district officials continue to have serious concerns using the 2015 FSA results to evaluate the performance of the students, teachers and schools because the test administration did not meet the expected standards of a high-stakes assessment program.

BI-NATIONAL HEALTH FAIR
The Interactive Community Alliance needs volunteers for its ninth annual Bi-National Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 am to 1 pm at the South Olive Community Center, 345 Summa St., West Palm Beach. The organization is especially in need of volunteers who speak Spanish to help translate, but Spanish is not required. The fair provides free medical services and information, immigration consultation, legal and financial planning, and general life skills counseling. Students interested in assisting at the fair should click here for more information.

ATTACK THE AIR POTATO

The Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteers to assist in air potato removal from parks on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 am to 12 noon, at Orchard View and Barwick Parks.

The air potato is an exotic invasive vine that smothers Florida native plants. Last year Delray Beach Parks and Recreation released air potato leaf beetles to control the air potato, but with the air potato growing 8 inches per day, the beetles need a little help. Volunteers are invited to bring their gloves and join in the attack. Community service hours will be awarded.

Orchard View Park is at 4060 Old Germantown Rd., off Linton Boulevard. Barwick Park is at 735 Barwick Rd., at the corner of Lake Ida and Barwick Roads. For more information, please contact Danielle Beardsley at (561) 243-7277 or by email at BeardsleyD@mydelraybeach.com

PTSA AND SAC:  WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

9/27/2015

The PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) is a volunteer organization made up of parents, teachers, students and community members.

The mission of the Atlantic Community High School Parent Teacher Student Association is to COLLABORATE, COMMUNICATE and CONNECT. We aim to:
  • Unite parents, teachers and students.
  • Establish a strong bond between the school and the community.
  • Educate the citizens, government and businesses of Delray Beach about the many opportunities offered by Atlantic Community High School.
  • Support school programs by offering and soliciting support — in money and manpower — of those programs.

The SAC (School Advisory Council) is mandated by state law to oversee a School Improvement Plan (SIP) describing specific ways the school aims to increase student academic performance. Every public school in Florida has a School Advisory Council (SAC) as a result of a 1991 law aiming to increase student achievement and the effectiveness of public schools. SAC members include the principal, school staff, parents, students and community members and must be representative of the ethnic, racial, and economic community served by each school.

The SAC meets monthly during the school year (except November, December and March). Read more about the purpose and functions of School Advisory Councils on the school district website here and see meeting dates, agendas and minutes on the ATL SAC page on Edline.
