The Sandoway Discovery Center, Delray Beach Parks and Recreation, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, and the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County are sponsoring the Great American Cleanup on the beach in Delray on Saturday, April 23. Check-in begins at 8 am at the Sandoway Discovery Center, 142 S. Ocean Blvd. Supplies will be provided and participants will earn community service hours. The Florida Humanities Council, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is offers three seminars to rising high school juniors and seniors. Offered in partnership with the University of Florida, Eckerd College and Flagler College the weeklong residential summer seminars combine concentrated college-level curriculum with hands-on activities and field trips. Renowned college expert Judi Robinovitz of Score At The Top Learning Centers and Schools shared her knowledge of college admissions with ATL parents, students and staff at our March 2016 PTSA meeting. The Pathfinder High School Scholarship Awards are presented each year to high school seniors in Palm Beach and Martin counties who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in 18 academic, vocational and athletic categories. Pathfinders is sponsored by The Palm Beach Post. These awards are presented each year to recognize excellence and to encourage these students to one day bring their considerable talents to the communities where each received a start on the path to a good education and a rewarding career.
Students will be interviewed on March 9 at Palm Beach Atlantic University. They will compete with top students in each area at all high schools in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. College scholarships of $4,000 for the first-place winner, $3,000 for the second-place winner, $2,500 for the third-place winner and $2,000 to the fourth-place winner in each category will be presented at a ceremony to be held May 10 at the Raymond F. The National Merit Scholarship Award is generally regarded as one of the highest honors possible for U.S. high school students. These academically talented high school seniors will continue in the competition for approximately 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than 36 million dollars. Students were named semifinalists by ranking among the highest scorers in Florida on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists represent less than one percent of all American high school seniors. National Merit Finalists must have a record of high academic performance, be recommended by their school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance. A personal essay and information about the student’s leadership in school and community activities are required to obtain finalist standing. The selection of 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners is now in progress. Winners will be announced in March. Congratulations and good luck to these high achieving students! Volunteers must be able to work 2 to 3 hours a week. Requirements include a two-hour orientation, flu shot, TB test and a reference letter.
