The school board last week approved two calendars for next school year — one that complies with the state law that says classes cannot begin earlier than two weeks before Labor Day and has classes begin on August 24, and another provisional calendar that has classes begin on August 17. The provisional calendar can only be enacted if the law is amended to allow for a school district to set its own start date.
If classes begin on August 24, the first semester will not end until after the winter break, on January 15. Parents, educators and school board members have expressed concern that extending the semester into January means that high school students will be required to take final exams after the winter break. School board members have encouraged parents to contact state representatives and the governor to express support for a change to the state law. The approved 2015-2016 calendar:

Community Yoga Day supports two local nonprofit organizations: Move Through Yoga aims to graduate mind-body fit students by providing them with an opportunity during their school day to lessen stress and heighten acuity. Students who Move Through Yoga, move through life. Ultimately students who have taken the full-year elective continue to prioritize and advocate for their own mind-body- on and off the mat, in and out of school. Connected Warriors provides free yoga to veterans, servicemen and women, and their families. The Atlantic Community High School drama club presents An Evening of Science Fiction by Ray Bradbury, featuring productions of Bradbury's short stories The Veldt, Kaleidoscope and To the Chicago Abyss.

Neuroscience Discovery Day on Saturday, Dec. 13 is an all-day celebration commemorating the December 2012 grand opening of the Max Planck Institute for Neuroscience. Students of all ages and adults are invited to explore interactive neuroscience activities such as Measure your Muscles, Do-it-yourself DNA, and Rewire your Brain. The celebration is free of charge and open to the public. Participate in experiments and demonstrations with neuroscientists and get a behind-the-scences look at where discoveries are born. Picture day for underclassmen is this week — Wednesday, Nov. 5 and Thursday, Nov. 6, during English classes. Order yearbooks now for $75 (before the price goes up to $85 on Dec. 1). The homecoming football game is Friday night, followed by the Bollywood dance. The Rotary Club of Delray Beach is hosting the 53rd Annual Halloween parade downtown on Saturday, Oct. 25. Volunteers should report to Atlantic Avenue at NE 2nd Avenue at 12 noon and plan to work until 2 pm.
The parade begins at 1 pm at the southeast corner of Old School Square Park and proceeds east on Atlantic Avenue through downtown to Veterans Park.
